Flora
Character Sheet, Illustration, and Visual Development of my original character, Flora.
The Process
References and initial concepts for Flora. The intention behind creating this character would be a female mage in a high-fantasy world with a theme around the stargazer lily. The left picture contains several references for my character such as similar high-fantasy mages, possible poses, faces, weapons, and other necessary images for guidance.
Meanwhile, the right picture contains possible variation and thumbnails for my character, including her main color palette and words that would help guide her creation.
Initial render and silhouette for Flora. At this point, the silhouette was chosen for the front angle of the character, and its values were portrayed as seen by the character in the middle. My initial attempt at rendering was not that good though as my flats weren’t solid, thus leading to rendering that had weird gradients or unnecessary soft edges.
Final character sheet of my original character. Looking back, certain improvements could definitely be made such as properly providing lighting on the subject, especially the face. Asides from that, better rendering could’ve been done in order to make the character more lively such including subsurface scattering to the skin.

From left to right, these were the progress from initial lineart, to final lineart, to the start of rendering with the inclusion of the ambient occlusion, diffuse reflection, and specular reflection. As seen in the last two pictures, the face had to be redone in order to make the character more appealing. At this period, the rendering of the stargazer lilies didn’t quite help due to it stealing attention from the focal subject. As such, proper revisions were made by lessening its saturation and contrast, as well as changing its hues.
Final render for my character illustration.
Progress in visually developing my character, Flora. The main development was on the character’s face, body, and hair as compared to the original one. As such, more detailed rendering was done to bring out the form more, and certain details such as the face and hair had to be reworked in order to make the character look more realistic.
Final rendering of my character, Flora. Once again, the face and hair were revised to make her look more realistic, and the rendering now included detailing on the skin to make light scatter not too linearly on her, thus showing some variety in the diffusion of light on her body.
