The Abandoned Plane
Concept art and illustration of the location created for my original IP, The Wastelander. What was once used for aerial transportation has now been transformed to a makeshift home by the scavenger leader of the Ashen Spire settlement, Captain Aamon.
Four pieces were created for this location; a side concept, hero shot, and two moodpieces (illustration). All 3D assets were either created or kitbashed from Sketchfab, while digital paintover was done in Adobe Photoshop.
The Process
Initial concepts for the pieces. The left contains ideation for the side concept. The middle contains the initial 3D blocking of the abandoned plane after its concept was agreed on. Finally, the right contains ideation for the illustration. Because the intention of the right was supposed to be a mood piece, different locations and time of day were created.
The left picture contains the work in progress for the side concept. At this point, the lineart and base color were finalized with some rendering in progress. The middle also contains similar progress with the plane at a different angle in order to show the setting from another perspective. Finally, the right contains the final version of the side concept placed in an environment in order to progress with the illustration.
At this point, all pictures now contain the final version of the pieces. The middle picture wasn’t fully rendered as its intention was supposed to be in the style of Airi Pan’s. Furthermore, the ideation of each piece was placed beside the final version, along with additional information, in order to complete the layout. Finally, the right picture contains a different angle and appropriate detailing of the plane as compared to the side concept where everything still looked too bright and new as if the apocalypse just happened.
From left to right, the illustration was changed to match the appropriate time period of my story in my IP. As my story took place years after the apocalypse, it meant certain changes would have been done to the location to make it feel more like a home for humans. In addition to that, the art style that I was applying in my story was Arcane-inspired. As such, more art-deco and color neon designs were needed.
Final digital paintover was done in Adobe Photoshop.
